It’s been a while since we last did a roundup of the month’s seasonal foods, but as the sun begins to make an appearance, we all want to be feeling fresh and healthy by eating fresh and healthy food. A great way to do that? Eat seasonally sensible!
June sees the beginning of some ‘limited edition’ seasonal red fruits, with an abundance of fresh fish and light salad vegetables.
Fruit:
cherries, elderflower, gooseberries, strawberries
New seasonal fruits this month are two English favourites: gooseberries and strawberries. This is the first seasonal month for strawberries in their short two-month seasonal period of the year. Both in the last month of their two seasonal months are cherries and elderflowers (great for fresh cordial).
Meat & Fish:
lamb, quail, crab, haddock, mackerel, lobster, plaice, sardines
New meat in season for June is quail: lean with a delicate flavour. Also in season is lamb and wood pidgeon. There is plenty of fresh, seasonal fish to choose from this month, including crab, plaice, sea trout and Dover sole. New in season is haddock, herring, mackerel, lobster and sardines.
Vegetables:
new potatoes, aubergine, courgettes, mangetout, runner beans, watercress
Flourishing this month are many delicious vegetable for a fresh and healthy summer salad. June vegetables include lettuce, new potatoes, rocket, watercress, spring onions, radishes. New in season this month are artichoke, aubergine, cabbage, courgettes, mangetout, peas, runner beans, and turnips. Other seasonal vegetables you can add to your meals are asparagus, carrots, broccoli and broad beans. Spoiled for choice, no?
